Congratulations!

Once you have a positive pregnancy test, call the office to schedule your first visit. Typically, this occurs between six and ten weeks of your pregnancy. Before your first visit, a nurse will call to review your history and medications. She will tell you about our practice, provide an overview of what to expect during your pregnancy, address common concerns, and answer any questions you may have.

After you schedule your office visit, here are additional steps to take:

  1. Create a patient portal account

  2. View important insurance and paperwork recommendations so you’re well prepared

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT WITH THE OBSTETRICIAN:

  • Receive an estimated date of delivery (EDD or due date)

  • Discuss genetic testing options

  • Review BMI, weight gain, and exercise recommendations

  • Review current medications and make alterations, if needed

  • Have prenatal bloodwork drawn

  • Receive a physical exam

COMMON QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:

Caffeine crosses the placenta easily and is metabolized more slowly by the fetus than the mother. Studies show it’s safe to have one caffeinated drink per day.

Air travel is safe during pregnancy up until 36-37 weeks. Flying increases the risk for venous thromboembolism; pregnant women should wear support hose and/or move frequently if traveling a long distance.

Sexual intercourse during pregnancy is not associated with adverse outcomes. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for women with a placenta previa, preterm labor or ruptured membranes.

Environmental exposures: It is safe to use common cleaning products in a well ventilated space.

Three-point seatbelts are recommended. The lap belt should be placed across the hips and below the uterus. The shoulder belt should be placed between the breasts and lateral to the uterus.

Hair treatments: A small amount of chemical is absorbed into your scalp, but experts consider it safe to dye hair in a well ventilated space.

Medication use: Speak to your doctor about medications to discuss risks and benefits during pregnancy. The Cleveland Clinic also has a comprehensive list of over-the-counter medications that are considered safe during your pregnancy.

Hot tubs and saunas: We recommend against hot tubs or sauna use during pregnancy. Warm baths and showers are fine.
