Celebrating National Women's Health Week

Often as women, we find ourselves prioritizing other things over our health, whether that be our families, our careers or both. But, it is important to make sure we are taking care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. Because, as we all know, when we have a full cup, it is much easier to give to the other areas of our lives that we care so deeply about. In honor of National Women’s Health Week, we wanted to share a few of our recommendations for self care and staying well.

  • Regular exercise: Regular exercise can help with mental health, sleep, physical health, and more. Try to dedicate some time each day for physical activity.

  • Regular health check-ups: Regular health exams and tests can find problems before they begin or detect them early enough to make a big difference. They are an important part of caring for yourself.

  • Well-balanced diet: Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can improve your mood, help with brain function, and positively impact the overall performance of your body, from making it easier for your body to fight off illness to making you more energized throughout the day.

  • Time for relationships and connections: Humans are a tribal species. And, it has been shown that connecting with others and having strong relationships can help with anxiety, depression and other conditions. Set aside time each week to connect with your friends and extended family members, even if it’s a phone or Zoom call.

  • Good sleep habits: Sleep deprivation and deficiencies affect us in a negative way, both physically and mentally. While this can be difficult at different phases of life, whether that be with a newborn or while dealing with the insomnia that comes with menopause or stress, it is important to talk to your doctor about ways to have better sleep.

  • Drinking responsibly: Alcohol can affect both your mental state and your body. If you’re going to drink, it is important to do so in moderation. No more than one drink per day is recommended for women.

  • Avoiding drugs and cigarettes: These can have serious negative impacts on your body and mental health. Avoid these at all costs.

  • Asking for help: This can mean anything from calling a friend when you are having a hard time to letting your doctor know about your concerns or stressors. Just remember, it is okay and important to ask for help when you need it.
