Circumcision
What is Circumcision?
If you are having a boy, you have the option to have your male son circumcised. This is the surgical removal of the layer of skin (foreskin) that covers the head of the penis.
If you choose to have your baby circumcised, the obstetrician will do this sometime before your hospital discharge. This is an elective procedure and therefore may not be covered by your insurance.
Why do Parents Choose Circumcision?
Health benefits (decreased risk of urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted infections)
Religious practice
Cultural standards
Increased risk of complications when surgery is performed on older child
Why do Parents Choose Against Cicumcision?
Risk of complications from procedure
They want the child to be able to make his own decision when he is old enough
Concern about baby experiencing pain
What Are The Risks Involved With Circumcision?
The most common complications are bleeding and infection
Rare complications involve problems with the foreskin (foreskin being cut too short or not enough being removed, foreskin not healing properly, and foreskin adhesion to penis)
