Welcoming Birth, Your Way: Low-Intervention Births at Jefferson OB/GYN

At Jefferson OB/GYN, we believe in patient-centered care and support for women who wish to pursue a low-intervention birth—a birth experience that supports your natural ability to deliver. Low-intervention birth isn’t about refusing medical support; it's about giving your body the space to labor naturally and stepping in only when it's truly needed.

What is a Low-Intervention Birth?

A low-intervention birth typically includes:

  • Allowing labor to begin naturally, waiting until you're in active labor before heading to the hospital

  • Encouraging movement and changing positions as labor progresses

  • Using intermittent fetal monitoring, rather than continuous monitoring, unless there's a medical indication

  • Opting for alternative pain management, such as hydrotherapy or massage, before considering medication

Alternative Pain Management Techniques

We offer a range of non-medical pain relief options, including :

  • Hydrotherapy (laboring in water)

  • Massage and acupressure

  • Position changes and walking

  • Hypnobirthing and breathing techniques

  • TENS units and heat/cold therapy

  • Continuous labor support from a doula

  • Audio analgesia and aromatherapy

Of course, medications and epidurals are also available for moms who choose them.

Planning Your Birth

Every journey is unique, and we encourage you to create a birth plan that reflects your preferences, such as the people you’d like present, pain management methods, mobility wishes, and partner participation in moments like cord cutting. Keep a copy in your prenatal record and bring one to the hospital.

The most recent data from the March of Dimes and the CDC's National Vital Statistics report a national primary C-section rate of 22%. By comparison, Jefferson OBGYN’s primary C-section rate is significantly lower - 16.77% - reflecting our commitment to patient-centered care and supporting low-intervention births whenever safely possible.

If you’re interested in exploring a low-intervention birth, let's discuss your goals and create a birth plan that supports your ideal experience. Schedule a prenatal appointment today to begin the conversation.
